
CANNABINOIDS FOR OLDER ADULTS…HOW THEY CHANGE LIVES
Growing old awaits us all. The inevitable cycle of life eternally moves on, and our good health requires a bit more effort and attention as we age. But as we can’t stop time, there are still specific natural remedies that have the potential to help us stay vital and strong throughout our whole life. Indeed, cannabinoids fall into this category. Their remarkable and unmatched health effects put them ahead of all competition since they offer so much potential. Medical cannabinoids have received significant attention in recent years, owing to legal changes in the status of the drugs for medicinal use in various European and North American jurisdictions. Both the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the World Health Organization (WHO) acknowledge the potential benefits of CBD.

1. THEY COULD HELP WITH BLOOD PRESSURE
Yes, you read that correctly. According to a 2017 study, the usage of CBD products lowered the blood pressure of the test subjects and their blood pressure after stress tests, including mental arithmetic, isometric exercise, and the cold pressor test.
These hemodynamic changes should be considered for people taking cannabinoids and suggest that further research is warranted to establish whether they have any role in treating cardiovascular disorders.
The tests have shown for the first time that, to our knowledge that in humans, acute administration of CBD reduces resting blood pressure, with a lower stroke volume and a higher heart rate. Heart problems are rising in modern times, and maybe nature is offering us a solution. We’ll see. Researchers acknowledge the beneficial effects of CBD for cardiovascular disorders but note that additional studies are needed to understand how it might contribute fully.

2. CANNABINOIDS CAN HELP US SLEEP BETTER
Quality sleep is essential for your physical and mental health; thus, it should not be overlooked. As we get older, we tend to need less sleep to feel rested. However, we also start to experience more and more problems with sleeping as we age, which is not okay. Preliminary research suggests CBD can help with several sleep disorders, including REM sleep behavior disorder and excessive daytime sleepiness disorder. Additional preliminary research suggests CBD can also help patients improve sleep and reduce anxiety.
Given the potential positive outcomes of CBD treating anxiety, it is speculated that CBD may also help reduce the anxiety associated with insomnia. Additionally, a new pilot study of CBD and THC use in humans with physician-diagnosed insomnia is underway. The study results will offer more insight into CBD’s effects on insomnia.
In a limited study of four patients with Parkinson’s disease, CBD helped manage the REM sleep behavior disorder symptoms. Before taking CBD, the patients experienced disorder symptoms 2–7 times per week. After taking CBD, the symptoms occurred 0–1 times a week. Further studies are necessary, but these initial results suggest CBD as a possible treatment for REM sleep behavior disorder.
We fully support treating sleep with more attention as this could be an outstanding solution to an everlasting problem.

3. CANNABINOIDS MAY LOWER INFLAMMATION
When your body encounters an offending agent (like viruses, bacteria, or toxic chemicals) or suffers an injury, it activates your immune system. Your immune system sends out its first responders: inflammatory cells and cytokines (substances that stimulate more inflammatory cells).
These cells begin an inflammatory response to trap bacteria and other offending agents or start healing injured tissue. The result can be pain, swelling, bruising, or redness. But inflammation also affects body systems you can’t see. With chronic inflammation, your body continues sending inflammatory cells even when there is no outside danger. For example, in rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory cells and substances attack joint tissues leading to an inflammation that comes and goes and can cause severe damage to joints with pain and deformities. Studies have shown that CBD may help reduce chronic pain by affecting endocannabinoid receptor activity, reducing inflammation, and interacting with neurotransmitters.
Some research suggests that CBD may be effective for certain types of pain, including nerve and back pain, when used on its own. Additionally, some research suggests that CBD may relieve symptoms of rheumatic diseases such as fibromyalgia. A study that included survey data from 2,701 people with fibromyalgia found that those who used CBD for pain relief generally reported slight to significant improvement in symptoms (source).
And according to preclinical evidence from rodent studies, CBD may have beneficial effects on pain and inflammation related to arthritis, but human studies are lacking (source).
Although researchers are cautiously optimistic that CBD may help treat some types of pain, more high-quality studies are needed to determine its effectiveness in pain management.
4. IT MAY HELP WITH MENTAL HEALTH AND NEUROPROTECTIVE PROPERTIES
As we get older, mental and brain-related problems start to come forward. This is where cannabinoids really shine. Researchers believe CBD’s ability to act on the endocannabinoid system and other brain-signaling systems may benefit those with neurological disorders.
In fact, one of the most studied uses for CBD is in treating neurological disorders such as epilepsy and multiple sclerosis. CBD is a potential bioactive for the treatment of neuroinflammatory-derived diseases, epilepsy, anxiety, and schizophrenia. For example, several studies have shown that treatment with CBD may improve the quality of life and sleep quality in people with Parkinson’s disease.
Due to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties, cannabidiol was proposed as a promising innovative strategy for Alzheimer’s disease. In this study, it was proved that by acting as an antioxidant, CBD may also be able to lower levels of oxidative stress in the brain. This is significant when it comes to Alzheimer’s because its memory loss symptoms are worsened from oxidative stress.
Data also suggests that CBD could be used to relieve specific symptoms of multiple sclerosis. As this 2018 study and others detail, by decreasing levels of inflammation, cannabidiol has been shown to reduce muscle spasticity and levels of pain that are associated with the condition.
The list of mental diseases and various other problems that can be affected by cannabinoids is astonishing. As ongoing research and developments into the potential health benefits of CBD continue to take place, public sentiments appear to sway in favor of the therapeutic potential of cannabinoids.
